Welcome to my new series of posts…no, just kidding. My alteration pile grew bigger and bigger in the last months. So it was time to mend some holes, shorten some trousers and more. I thought altering clothes isn´t really interesting for a blog post, but it seems it is interesting enough… :-D.
The first alteration i want to show you is my Dirndl-Blouse, which i didn´t make myself. I bought it in a second hand kind of shop. I love the lace on the sleeves and the front, but it is from the late 80s. Weird shoulders, too high neckline and too much width in the bodice, which is actually kind of weird, because Dirndl-Blouses are normally more fitted.
*Willkommen zu meiner neuen Serie von Beiträgen … Nein, ich mache nur Spaß. Mein Änderungsstapel wurde in den letzten Monaten immer größer. Es war also an der Zeit, einige Löcher zu reparieren, Hosen zu kürzen und vieles mehr. Ich dachte, das Ändern von Kleidungsstücken ist für einen Blogbeitrag nicht wirklich interessant, aber es scheint interessant genug zu sein … :-D.
Die erste Änderung, die ich euch zeigen möchte, ist meine Dirndl-Bluse, die ich nicht selbst gemacht habe. Ich habe sie in einem Second Hand Laden gekauft. Ich liebe die Spitze an den Ärmeln und an der Vorderseite, aber sie stammt aus den späten 80ern. Schräge Schultern, zu hoher Halsausschnitt und zu viel Weite im Oberteil, was eigentlich seltsam ist, weil Dirndl-Blusen normalerweise taillierter sind.
Dirndl-Blouses always end either right after the bust or a few cm below. This is because the bodice of a Dirndl is really tight, with a “normal” blouse the fit wouldn´t be right.
*Dirndl-Blusen enden entweder direkt nach der Brust oder wenige cm darunter. Dies liegt daran, dass das Mieder eines Dirndl wirklich eng ist, bei einer “normalen” Bluse würde die Passform nicht stimmen.
I started with the neckline. If you know Dirndl-Blouses, the first picture you have in mind are those really, really low necklines, which shows everything you´ve got or you haven´t got. That is not traditional, and i don´t like those. Call me prudish, but that won´t change a thing. I folded my blouse in have, pinned shoulder seam onto shoulder seam, the front edges together and marked how i wanted my neckline.
*Ich habe mit dem Ausschnitt angefangen. Wenn ihr Dirndl-Blusen kennen, ist das erste Bild, das ihr euch vorstellt, die wirklich tiefen Ausschnitte, die alles zeigen, was Sie haben oder was Sie nicht haben. Das ist nicht traditionell und das gefällt mir nicht. Nennt mich prüde, aber daran ändert sich nichts. Ich habe meine Bluse zusammengefaltet, Schulternaht über Schulternaht gesteckt, die Vorderkanten zusammengefügt und eingezeichnet, wie ich meinen Ausschnitt haben wollte.
The first part of the front edge has to be straight! And never cut too much of the back, it could happen that the neckline starts gaping if it is too low. After i changed the shoulder seams, i had to recut the neckline. It is better to have the possibility to recut, you always can make it lower but not higher.
*Der erste Teil der Vorderkante muss gerade sein! Und schneidet niemals zu viel von der Rückseite ab. Es kann vorkommen, dass der Halsausschnitt zu klaffen beginnt, wenn er zu niedrig ist. Nachdem ich die Schulternähte geändert hatte, musste ich den Ausschnitt neu schneiden. Es ist besser, die Möglichkeit zu haben, neu zu zuschneiden, man kann es immer niedriger machen, aber nicht mehr höher.
After that i had to unpick the sleeves. I have never seen so many tiny, tiny stitches…ahhh…it took me more than two hours to get them out, and i couldn´t cut them out because only the front armhole had to change, the back fit well…so i still needed the seam allowance.
*Danach musste ich die Ärmel heraustrennen. Ich habe noch nie so viele winzige, winzige Stiche gesehen … ahhh … ich habe mehr als zwei Stunden gebraucht, um sie herauszuholen, und ich konnte sie nicht herausschneiden, weil nur das vordere Armloch geändert werden musste, der Rücken passte gut … also brauchte ich noch die Nahtzugabe.
In the picture above you really can see how wide the blouse was. So off with the width.
*Auf dem Bild oben kann man wirklich sehen, wie breit die Bluse war. Also weg mit der Breite.
I sewed the side seams and the shoulder seams, after that i folded the blouse in half (like the first pictures with the neckline), with side seam onto side seam and shoulder seam onto shoulder seam. I made sure that the armholes were identical, pinned everything down and then cut along the pins. With this, the sleeves look and fit better, because you have more room to move.
*Ich habe die Seitennähte und die Schulternähte genäht, danach habe ich die Bluse zur Hälfte gefaltet (wie bei den ersten Bildern mit dem Halsausschnitt), mit Seitennaht über Seitennaht und Schulternaht über Schulternaht. Ich stellte sicher, dass die Armlöcher identisch waren, steckte alles fest und schnitt entlang der Stecknadeln. Dadurch sehen die Ärmel besser aus und passen besser, weil man mehr Bewegungsfreiheit hat.
Here i made a tiny mistake, i should have gathered the top of the sleeves a little bit, this ensures that the sleeves fit in perfectly. But with a lot of pins, slowly sewing and lots of ironing the sleeves are back where they belong. I have to admit, it would look better if i haven´t made this mistake…but well. It doesn´t bother me (for now).
*Hier habe ich einen winzigen Fehler gemacht, ich hätte die Armkugel ein wenig zusammenkräuseln sollen, um sicherzustellen, dass die Ärmel perfekt passen. Aber mit vielen Stecknadeln, langsamem Nähen und viel Bügeln sind die Ärmel wieder da, wo sie hingehören. Ich muss zugeben, es würde besser aussehen, wenn ich diesen Fehler nicht gemacht hätte … aber gut. Es stört mich nicht (vorerst).
It seems that i can´t get enough from bias tape these days. But it is a great way to finish off edges! I didn´t have the exact type of fabric nor the right white for the blouse. That means, the bias tape needed to be invisible (or concealed). I sewed it to the right side with some cm stick out on both ends. Then stitched it down (next picture), folded it over and cut the half of the bias tape width off, because i wanted it to be narrow. After that i folded the bias tape, so no raw edges could be seen and sewed it down by hand.
*Es scheint, dass ich heutzutage nicht genug von Schrägbandern bekommen kann. Aber es ist eine großartige Möglichkeit, Kanten zu fertigen! Ich hatte weder den genauen Stoff noch das richtige Weiß für die Bluse. Das Schrägband musste also unsichtbar (oder verborgen) sein. Ich habe es auf der rechten Seite angenäht und an beiden Enden einige cm herausragen lassen. Dann habe ich es zusammengenäht (nächstes Bild), es gefaltet und die Hälfte des Schrägbandes abgeschnitten, weil ich wollte, dass es schmal ist. Danach habe ich das Schrägband gefaltet, sodass keine rohen Kanten zu sehen waren.
And that was it. My blouse is finished and fits me alot better than before.
