Alteration: Kaftan (Änderung: Kaftan)

Today, i only have a small and easy alteration for you. the last days, it was as if the time is running through my fingers. I have so much to do…and so little time.

I don´t know when i bought this black kaftan, but it was a long time ago! It had a ring in the front, a kind of decoration of the v-neck, long sleeves (which is nonesense for summer) and the fit of the shoulders was a bit odd. All in all, these weren´t really big changes.

*Heute habe ich nur eine kleine und einfache Änderung für euch. In den letzten Tagen war es, als ob die Zeit durch meine Finger läuft. Ich habe so viel zu tun … und so wenig Zeit.

Ich weiß nicht, wann ich diesen schwarzen Kaftan gekauft habe, aber es ist lange her! Er hatte einen Ring an der Vorderseite, eine Art Verzierung des V-Ausschnitts, lange Ärmel (was für den Sommer nicht sinnvoll ist) und die Passform der Schultern war etwas seltsam. Alles in allem waren dies keine wirklich großen Änderungen.

I’m sorry I did not iron it … or rather, that I took a picture before ironing.. *Es tut mir Leid, dass ich ihn nicht gebügelt habe…oder besser gesagt, dass ich ein Foto vor dem Bügeln gemacht habe.

First I removed the ring, then I put on the kaftan and marked where I would sew away the resulting width.

*Zuerst habe ich den Ring entfernt, danach habe ich den Kaftan angezogen und markiert wo ich die entstandene Weite wegnähen werde.

The fit of the shoulders was a result of the too deep V-Neckline. So i needed to sew the neckline smaller, which i did with sewing away the width i talked of before.

*Die Passform der Schultern war auf den zu tiefen V-Ausschnitt zurückzuführen. Also musste ich den Halsausschnitt kleiner nähen. Dabei habe ich die Breite weggenäht, von der ich vorher gesprochen habe.

The problem with this top was, that it was large in the bust area but had a good fit in the hip area (yes i have wide hips). In the end i sewed away a wedge…like a big dart in the front center.
I ironed the middle of the front, pinned the end and the beginning, and sewed a straight line that narrowed to the end.

*Das Problem bei diesem Oberteil war, dass es im Brustbereich groß war, im Hüftbereich jedoch eine gute Passform hatte (ja, ich habe breite Hüften). Am Ende habe ich einen Keil weggenäht … wie ein großer Abnäher in der vorderen Mitte.
Ich habe die Mitte der Vorderseite gebügelt, das Ende und den Anfang festgesteckt und eine gerade Linie genäht, die bis zum Ende hin schmaler ausläuft.

Ironing the front is important. *Die Vorderseite bügeln ist wichtig.

Make sure that everything lays correctly, nothing should stick out. *Stellt sicher, dass alles richtig liegt, nichts sollte herausragen.

Narrow down the seam.*Die Naht auslaufen lassen.

After that cut away the fabric. There should be 2mm left over. Iron the seam, turn it over and stitch 0,5 cm away from the edge…it is good to sew a french seam, because you can´t serge at the end whre the seam is narrow.

Now the main alteration is finished, now to the sleeves. Try the Kaftan on and mark on one sleeve, where you want your sleeves to end. Then cut it off, take the cut-off part of your sleeve and lay it over the other sleeve. Now you have two identical cut-offs.

*Danach den Stoff abschneiden. Es sollten 2 mm übrig bleiben. Die Naht bügeln, umdrehen und 0,5 cm vom Rand entfernt nähen. Es ist gut, eine französische Naht zu nähen, weil man am Ende nicht versäubern kann, wenn die Naht schmal ist.

Nun ist die Hauptänderung abgeschlossen, jetzt zu den Ärmeln. Probiere den Kaftan an und markiere auf einem Ärmel, wo die Ärmel enden sollen. Dann schneidet den Teil ab, nehmt den abgeschnittenen Teil eures Ärmels und legt ihn über den anderen Ärmel. Jetzt habt ihr zwei identische Abschnitte.

The last step is to serge the hem of the sleeves, measure the width of the hem, iron it and sew it down.

*Der letzte Schritt ist, den Saum der Ärmel zu schneiden, die Breite des Saums zu messen, zu bügeln und zu nähen.

And the alterationis done!

*Und fertig ist die Änderung!

Much better, but still needs to be ironed. *Viel besser, muss aber noch gebügelt werden.
