Mary Quant-style minidress

It took me a while to finish the dress and this blog post. But finally i´m done, and i love it.

The pattern is from the V&A Museum. Sewing pattern designed by Alice and Co. Fabric provided by Ray Stitch…and the best…IT IS FREE!

There are various styles and sizes of this dress and an easy-to-follow instruction. So i printed the pattern out and glued everything together. I didn´t end up cutting it, because i probably will be sewing the dress again, next time with  sleeves. So i traced it on tissue paper and then cut it out. I chose the round collar with the keyhole neckline, the round pockets, as well as the belt in the back.

*Ich habe eine Weile gebraucht, um das Kleid und diesen Blog-Beitrag fertigzustellen. Aber endlich bin ich fertig und ich liebe es.

Es gibt verschiedene Varianten und Größen von diesem Kleid, und eine einfach zu befolgende Anleitung. Also habe ich das Muster ausgedruckt und alles zusammengeklebt. Ich habe es nicht ausgeschnitten, weil ich das Kleid wahrscheinlich wieder  nähen werde, nächstes Mal mit Ärmeln. Also habe ich es auf Seidenpapier nachgezeichnet und es dann ausgeschnitten. Ich entschied mich für den runden Kragen mit dem Schlüsselloch Ausschnitt, den runden Taschen sowie der Rückenspange (dem Dragoner) im Rücken.

For me it was unusual, that the seam allowances were included, but i think that is normal with patterns from the Uk or US. I don´t know if i like it, i´m just not used to it.
I also played with two fabric, the main fabric is this white cotton poplin with black leaves, and the collar, pocket facing and back belt were cut out of a thicker, white cotton.

I didn´t follow the instructions step-by-step, because i started with ironing the interfacing to the front and back facing, the collar, back belt, pocket facing and part of the pocket.

*Für mich war es ungewöhnlich, dass die Nahtzugaben enthalten waren, aber ich denke, das ist bei Mustern aus Großbritannien oder den USA normal. Ich weiß nicht, ob es mir gefällt, ich bin es einfach nicht gewohnt.
Ich habe auch mit zwei Stoffen gespielt, der Hauptstoff ist dieser weiße Baumwoll-Popeline mit schwarzen Blättern, und der Kragen, der Taschenbesatz und der Dragoner wurden aus einem dickeren, weißen Baumwolle-Stoff zugeschnitten.

Ich habe die Anweisungen nicht Schritt für Schritt befolgt, da ich mit dem Bügeln der Einlage auf den Besatz des Vorder- und Rückenteils, des Kragens, des Dragoners, dem Taschenbesatz und eines Teils der Tasche, begonnen habe.

After that i sewed the bust darts, ironed them and sewed the shoulder seams together. Then i serged the side and shoulder seams singly.

*Danach habe ich die Brustabnäher genäht, gebügelt und die Schulternähte zusammengenäht. Dann habe ich die Seiten- und Schulternähte einzeln versäubert.

The instructions tell you to stay stitch the neckline, but i don´t do this ususally, except i have a stretchy or slippery fabric. Now it was time for the pockets, which were a bit of  “i don´t know how to do this yet, but lets just try out”. And it went better, than i thought. I cut out my pocket a bit different, the flap, which overlays, is white and the rest is out of the main fabric. Thus i needed to iron interfacing onto a part of the main pocket AND the flap.

*Die Anleitung sagt dir, dass du den Ausschnitt mit einer Stütznaht versehen sollst, aber das mache ich normalerweise nicht, es sei denn, ich habe einen dehnbaren oder rutschigen Stoff.
Jetzt war es Zeit für die Taschen, die ein bisschen “Ich weiß noch nicht, wie das geht, aber lass es uns einfach ausprobieren” waren. Und es lief besser, als ich dachte. Ich habe meine Tasche etwas anders zugeschnitten, die Klappe, die darüber liegt, ist weiß und der Rest ist aus dem Hauptstoff. Daher musste ich die Einlage, auf einen Teil der Haupttasche UND der Klappe bügeln.

Pocket with interfacing but without the flap. *Tasche mit Einlage, aber ohne Klappe.

This is were it gets a bit tricky. The flap lays with its right side (the one without interfacing) onto the left side of the main pocket. Then it got sewn. *Hier wird es etwas knifflig. Die Klappe liegt mit der rechten Seite (die ohne Einlage) auf der linken Seite der Haupttasche. Dann wurde sie genäht.

The seam allowance got ironed flat. Here you can see the left side of the flap and the right side of the main pocket. *Die Nahtzugabe wurde flach gebügelt. Hier seht ihr die linke Seite der Klappe und die rechte Seite der Haupttasche.

After that, i stitched the curve of pocket (main pocket and flap). So i can iron it over more easily. *Danach habe ich die Kurve der Tasche (Haupttasche und Klappe (Patte)) abgesteppt. So kann man es leichter bügeln.

Than i cut open the piece were both fabrics met, but only till the running stitch. *Dann habe ich das Stück aufgeschnitten, wo beide Stoffe miteinander vernäht waren, aber nur bis zur Absteppung.

Clipping the curves every 2cm. *Die Kurven alle 2 cm einschneiden.

First ironing the seam allowance of the flap over. Here you can see, why you had to cut open that tiny bit. *Zuerst die Nahtzugabe der Klappe umbügeln. Hier könnt ihr sehen, warum ihr dieses kleine Stück aufschneiden musstet.

Then turning the pocket around and ironing the seam allowance of the main pocket over. *Dreht dann die Tasche um und bügelt die Nahtzugabe der Haupttasche um.

Again turing the pocket around and ironing the flap down. Make sure that all corners are hidden and the curves are nice and round. *Wieder die Tasche umdrehen und die Klappe bügeln. Stellt  sicher, dass alle Ecken versteckt und die Kurven schön rund sind.

Stitching the flap onto the pocket. *Klappe auf die Tasche nähen.

After the pockets were finished, i stitched them onto the dress, the straight side placed on the side seam.

*Nachdem die Taschen fertig waren, nähte ich sie auf das Kleid, wobei die gerade Seite auf die Seitennaht gelegt wurde.

Make sure to try on the dress with pinned pockets! *Probiert das Kleid unbedingt mit festgesteckten Taschen an!

 

The next step ws to sew the collar, the button loop and the back belt.

*Der nächste Schritt ist das Nähen des Kragens, der Knopfschlaufe und des Dragoners.

Right sides facing each other and slowly around the curves. *Rechte Seiten einander zugewandt und langsam um die Kurven.

You should cut back you seam allowance a bit, if you have a heavier fabric. My seam allowance layed quite nicely, so i dind´t cut it back. *Ihr solltet die Nahtzugabe etwas kürzen, wenn ihr einen schwereren Stoff habt. Meine Nahtzugabe lag ganz gut, deshalb habe ich sie nicht zurückgeschnitten.

BUT…you need to clip the corners…ALWAYS. *ABER … Sie müssen die Kurven einschneiden … IMMER.

Turning the collar around and iron it flat. *Dreht den Kragen um und bügelt ihn flach.

At the back belt you need to let open a gap, so you can turn it inside out. *Am Dragoner müsst ihr eine Lücke offen lassen, damit ihr ihn umdrehen könnt.

Snip off the corners. *Schneidet die Ecken ab.

Turn it around and iron it down. *Dreht ihn herum und bügelt ihn.

The collar and the back belt got topstitched afterwards. I tried to sew the button loop as the instructions told me, but i coulnd´t, by the life of me, turn it inside out with the needle (or anything else). So i just cut a little rectangle, ironed it in half, opened it up again and folded the edges to the (ironed) middle, ironed it flat and stitched it down. This is how i usually sew my hangers, but it is easy and it fulfills its job!

After that i stitched the collar and the button loop onto the neckline of the dress. Don´t forget the seam allowance of the keyhole!

*Danach wurden der Kragen und der Dragoner abgesteppt. Ich habe versucht, die Knopfschlaufe zu nähen, wie es mir die Anleitung sagte, aber ich konnte sie einfach nicht mit der Nadel (oder irgendetwas anderem) umstülpen. Also habe ich einfach ein kleines Rechteck zugeschnitten, es in zwei Hälften gebügelt, es wieder geöffnet und die Ränder zur (gebügelten) Mitte gefaltet, es flach gebügelt und vernäht. So nähe ich normalerweise meine Aufhänger, aber es ist einfach und erfüllt seine Aufgabe!

Danach habe ich den Kragen und die Knopfschlaufe an den Ausschnitt des Kleides genäht. Nahtzugabe des Schlüssellochs nicht vergessen!

The seam allowance is only 0,5 cm, because you still have to sew on the facing. *Die Nahtzugabe beträgt nur 0,5 cm, da man noch auf den Besatz annähen muss.

 

The hardest part of this pattern was the facing. Honestly i never did it this way. I was pleasently surprised, that it went that smoothly.

*Der schwierigste Teil dieses Schnittes war der Besatz. Ehrlich gesagt habe ich das nie so gemacht. Ich war angenehm überrascht, dass es so reibungslos verlief.

First closing the shoulder seams, and iron them open. *Zuerst die Schulternähte schließen, und auseinander bügeln.

Then pinning the facing onto the neckline. (Keyhole 0,5cm!) *Dann den Besatz auf den Ausschnitt stecken. (Schlüsselloch 0,5cm!)

And stitching it down and clipping in at the curves. *Und es festnähen und an den Kurven einschneiden.

After that you have to lay the dress open flat, with the right side of the facing showing and start rolling, till you reach the other armhole. Make sure that the part of the facing is not part of the roll.

*Danach müssen Sie das Kleid flach und mit der rechten Seite des Besatzes oben  hinlegen und mit dem Einrollen beginnen, bis ihr das andere Armloch erreicht. Stellt sicher, dass der Teil des Besatzes nicht Teil der Rolle ist.

Right side of the facing is showing. *Die rechte Seite des Besatzes ist zu sehen.

Start rolling…* Zusammenrollen anfangen..

…and rolling…* und rollen…

..but without the facing. *…aber ohne den Teil des Besatzes.

Take the facing and put it onto the armhole, right sides facing. *Nehmt den Besatz und setzt ihn rechts auf rechts auf das Armloch.

Pin it down. *Feststecken

Carry it to you sewing machine. *Tragt es zu eurer Nähmaschine.

You have to pull the dress out of the wrap and start again on the other side. After turning around everything, i topstitched the keyhole neckline.

 

The dress was a tad to wide in the waist area, so i sewed in some elastic, which will be hidden by the back belt later.

*Ihr müsst das Kleid aus dem Wickel ziehen und auf der anderen Seite von vorne beginnen. Nachdem ich alles umgedreht hatte, steppte ich den Schlüssellochausschnitt ab.

Das Kleid war ein bisschen zu weit im Taillenbereich, also habe ich ein Gummiband eingenäht, das später vom Dragoner verdeckt wird.

First stitch down the edges, then stretch the elastic and pull while sewing over it. *Zuerst die Ränder festnähen, dann das Gummiband spannen und beim Nähen auch daran ziehen.

I finished the hem with some white bias tape. *Ich fertigte den Saum mit einem weißen Schrägband.

First i planned a normal hem, that´s why i serged the edge. *Zuerst hatte ich einen normalen Saum geplant, deshalb habe ich die Kante versäubert.

Sewing on the buttons…* Knöpfe annähen…

…the back belt is held down by the buttons. *… der Dragoner wird von den Knöpfen niedergehalten.

 

And the dress is finished! After sewing on the buttons, i couldn´t get the dress over the shoulders of my mannequin….so i had to make some pictures with me wearing it…which ,you know, i don´t really like and do.

*Und das Kleid ist fertig! Nachdem ich die Knöpfe angenäht hatte, konnte ich das Kleid nicht über die Schultern meiner Schaufensterpuppe bekommen … also musste ich ein paar Bilder mit mir machen…was ich nicht wirklich mag und oft tue.
