It´s a vest, It´s a vest, made from real….

(Sorry for the pun in the title, some might get it and some don´t…but it is constantly in my head)

This month i didn´t finish a lot (still haven´t started on Christmas Knitting…but this year it is only a pair of mittens). But i did draft (or started) some new patterns, which need to be tested. And i made a bag from two pairs of old jeans. Which came out quite nice.

But first my knitting project, which i started at the end of October and finished on November 8th. The pattern is called Sleeveless Pullover, i would call it a vest (well in german we call it “Pullunder”), by Jack Frost. It is a free vintage pattern from 1951. You can get it on Ravelry, or if you don´t like Ravelry you can also get it HERE.

The yarn was the same i mentioned in my last post (and probably will mention in my next post, because right now i´m knitting mittens with it). For that vest, the yarn was perfect, that´s why i´m sure this yarn is not really a DK weight but an Worsted weight yarn. As usually i didn´t make a gauge/yarn swatch, because i never do that and most times i´m lucky…(don´t be like me, swatches are important!).

And it was quite an easy and fast knit. The front and the back are the same except the neckline, which was a first for me because i never ever tried to knit a v-neck.
The funny thing with vintage patterns (or patterns in general actually), if i “find” a mistake, i´m never sure if it is a mistake in the pattern or i did something wrong. With this pattern, i think it was in the pattern. When you are in the front – casting off sts for shoulder shaping it says = 6 sts every other row 4 times. You start with 28 sts for the first side. Knit 2 together – 27 sts. Than dec 1 sts every 4 rows 10 times – 17. I only was able to cast off 6 sts 2 times and 5 sts one time. Weirdly enough i think in the back there were enough sts.
I also tried to make the neck band three times (Instruction: taking up 57 -1 -57 sts), i couldn´t manage it, there were too many sts in my opinion,in the end i managed it with about 45/47 sts ( i was so frustrated, i didn´t write it down.)

This is the back…it looks amazing. The pattern is not a cable pattern just a variation of purl and knit stitches!

It is cozy and it fits very nicely!
As i mentioned in my last blog post, i wasn´t (and i´m still not) really sure about the hat i knitted. I probably won´t wear it , but i don´t want to frog it as well…which is a stupid situation. I´m now knitting some easy mittens (also a vintage pattern) and then i won´t have much left of the yarn for anything else. Which is quite a nice feeling to have finally knit up (nearly) everything of that huge ball of yarn.

Knitting Adventures: Cabled Cardigan by Lana Grossa

After finishing this project in mid February, i finally have the motivation to write a blog post about it. Sadly, i lost or misplaced – who knows – my printed instructions (with my notes on it). Well i can remember the most important things so it is ok.

This is my second big project, normally i only make socks and scarves and so on, but my first successfull big project. The first one was not really good – wearable – but not outside my house. I´m playing with the thought of reusing the yarn, but i don´t know.

I´m planning on making a Dirndl, or better said i´m halfway there to finish it. So i needed a knitted Cardigan that is in the same colour family.

I found a free pattern online : Damenjacke mit Zopfmuster und Blütenstickerei by LanaGrossa, it was published in Filati Trachten 6 (Modell 2) as well as online -> https://www.woolplace.de/strickanleitungen/damenjacke-mit-zopfmuster-und-bluetenstickerei/ .It is only available in german and in two sizes (36/38 and 40/42).

I chose a bit thicker yarn than the instructions suggested, and the smaller size. The body of the cardigan fits perfectly, but the sleeves are a bit tight. It is not really a problem, because i can wear it as it is. But i have the feeling a lot of knitting patterns (and sewing patterns as well) have very tight sleeves. Maybe i have too musculous arms…haha.

The yarn i chose was Schachenmayr Soft&Easy Color (which is weirdly not in the Ravelry Database) in Colourway 90 (which is a light blue with white mixed in). 100 g have about 235 m (3.5 oz = 257 yards), it is a medium weight yarn (Nr.4). Gauge is 19 sts x 26 rows = 10x 10 cm. It is 100% acrylic, but one of the softest acrylic yarns i have ever touched.
And if someone asks (or is shocked – yes this happens) why i make a cardigan out of acrylic (in some peoples eyes “cheap” stuff). BECAUSE i can´t wear wool, it seems that i´m – to a certain degree – allergic to it. My skin starts to itch and get red spots. I have to admit, that I haven´t tried every kind of wool and weirdly my feet are fine with virgin wool.

I bought about 600g of it (and after knitting there was one skein plus a leftover left). I used 3.5 mm and 4 mm needles + 4 mm cable needle and knitted everything flat.
I started with the back piece ribbing with a 3.5 mm needle and changed to the 4 mm needles afterwards. First the cable pattern was a bit confusing (this was my first time making cables) but i got used to it pretty quickly.

After finishing the back piece, i noticed that i misread the pattern, or better said, i misunderstood the instructions. As you can see in the picture, i have “two rows” of purl stitches but in the pattern it is only one. This happened because i purled on the right side of the work (as given in the instructions) but i worked the row in the opposite at the wrong side of the work. I was always taught, that if you knit on the right side you purl on the wrong side and vice versa. Well, i didn´t want to change my mistake, so in continued it throughout the cardigan.

The next “mistake” happened while knitting the front pieces. In the instructions all cables always show in one direction (as you can see at the back piece above), I thought (while knitting the first front piece) it would look very nice, if one front piece has cables that look to the right and the other has cables that look to the left. I mean it does look nice, but doesn´t fit to the back cables…but i didn´t really think about that while knitting…well well..
I knitted the sleeves so they fit to the cables of the front pieces (one side left leaning and one side right leaning).

If you look closely you can see the slight change in colour. I was devasttated at first, but i got used to it and now you can hardly see it, while wearing. Weirdly all the skeins have the same dye lot numbers…

What i noticed is that, although the instructions are very good written and understandable, they change their counting of rows once (at least this is what i think they did). I can´t remember exactly (and this is were i would need my written notes) but I think first they counted the Front and Back row as one row and than, while knitting the sleeves, the front row was counted as one and the back row as one as well. I remember that i noticed something isn´t quite right because i needed to calculate something for my sleeves twice and to me it appeared as if there was some change.

Nonetheless, i really liked this pattern, although it took me ages to finish it. I started in mid september 2021 and finished it in mid february 2022. I lost interest once in a while and than came back and knitted half a piece in one day.
And after knitting, it took me ages to sew everything together (and then to crochet the border and sew on buttons…haha).

I know, you can´t see that much, but once i finish my dirndl i will make some better pictures!

All in all, i really like it. It was a ton of work but totally worth it! And i realized that i totally love cables or any kind of texture in knitting!

Linen Vest: Part II (Leinen-Weste Teil II)

Sorry for the long delay, but now the vest is finally finished. I made some mistakes and if i would sew this vest again, i´ll make some major changes.

After the fitting, i had to let out the side seams at the hip area…good i had enough seam allowance left over. While trying it on, i noticed a little gap in the bust area. I looked closer and….i forgot to iron some seam tape to the neckline and armholes! So before i cut out the lining i had to fix this.

*Sorry für die lange Verspätung, aber jetzt ist die Weste endlich fertig. Ich habe einige Fehler gemacht und wenn ich diese Weste noch einmal nähen würde, würde ich einige größere Änderungen vornehmen.

Nach der Anprobe musste ich die Seitennähte im Hüftbereich herauslassen … gut, ich hatte genug Nahtzugabe übrig. Als ich es anprobierte, bemerkte ich eine kleine Lücke im Brustbereich. Ich schaute genauer hin und … ich vergaß, ein Stück Nahtband am Ausschnitt und an den Armlöchern zu bügeln! Bevor ich das Futter zu schnitt, musste ich es reparieren.

I don´t have seam tape at home..but this is fine as well. Just cut it in half. *Ich habe kein Nahtband zu Hause, aber das ist auch in Ordnung. Schneidet es einfach in zwei Hälften.

Always iron the seam tape before sewing everything together…seam tape over the seams is a big NO-NO! *Bügelt immer das Nahtband, bevor ihr alles zusammennäht … Nahtband über den Nähten ist ein großes NO-NO!

It is not professional…and it doesn´t look nice, but it solved the problem with the gap.
Then i cut out the lining.

*Es ist nicht professionell … und es sieht nicht gut aus, aber es hat das Problem mit der Lücke gelöst.
Dann schnitt ich das Futter zu.

I didn´t want to have a seam in the front piece, so i cut it out together. It didn´t work out with the back. * Ich wollte keine Naht im Vorderteil haben, also schnitt ich sie zusammen aus. Mit dem Rücken hat es nicht geklappt.

Don´t forget to add extra seam allowance atn the front, this prevents the lining to be too tight. All in all i had 2 cm Seam allowance everywhere except the neckline and armhole. *Vergesst nicht, vorne eine zusätzliche Nahtzugabe hinzuzufügen, damit das Futter nicht zu eng wird. Alles in allem hatte ich 2 cm Nahtzugabe überall außer am Ausschnitt und am Armloch.

After cutting out, i marked and sewed the dart, like i did with the darts of the outer fabric. I sewed together all of the pieces (like i did wth the outer fabric), ironed everything and serged the seam allowances.

Then i sewed the lining to the front pieces of the vest.

*Nach dem Ausschneiden markierte und nähte ich den Abnäher, wie ich es mit den Abnähern des Oberstoffs tat. Ich habe alle Teile zusammengenäht (wie ich es mit dem Oberstoff getan habe), alles gebügelt und die Nahtzugaben versäubert.

Dann habe ich das Futter an die Vorderteile der Weste genäht.

After this, i pinned the lining to the neckline (always right sides together!).

*Danach habe ich das Futter an den Ausschnitt geheftet (immer die rechten Seiten zusammen!).

The seam allowance got clipped in every 2 cm, this is for creating nice curves. After that, i turned everything over…so that you have the right sides outside. Be carefull with the corners, they need to be nice and sharp. I normally use the tips of my scissors, but actually you shouldn´t do this, because you can tear out the fabric. Then everything got ironed nice and flat and stepped down.

*Die Nahtzugabe wurde alle 2 cm eingeschnitten, um schöne Kurven zu erzeugen. Danach habe ich alles umgedreht … damit man die richtige Seite draußen hat. Seid vorsichtig mit den Ecken, sie müssen schön und scharf sein. Normalerweise benutze ich die Spitze meiner Schere, aber eigentlich solltest man das nicht tun, weil man den Stoff einreißen kann. Dann wurde alles schön flach gebügelt und abgesteppt.

Never forget to clip the seam allowances at curves. *Vergesst niemals, die Nahtzugaben an den Kurven einzuschneiden.

Till now everything was easy peasy… but now was time to stitch together the lining and the armholes. I have to admit, if i made the straps of the vest a bit wider, erverything would have been easy. But no…i wanted slim straps. I tried to sew it the usual way:  in two steps. First step – sewing from shoulder seam to side seam. Second step – sewing from side seam to shoulder seam.
You can´t sew in one go, because you have to pull the shoulder seam out of the strap and put the right sides together.

This was quite difficult. So with the second armhole i tried something new (to me). I ironed the seam allowances of both armholes (lining and linen) to the inside, pinned everything carefully together and slowly stitched them together at the edge. It looked much better than the first armhole.

*Bis jetzt war alles ganz einfach, aber jetzt war es an der Zeit, das Futter und die Armlöcher zusammenzunähen. Ich muss zugeben, wenn ich die Träger der Weste etwas breiter gemacht hätte, wäre alles einfach gewesen. Aber nein … ich wollte schmale Träger. Ich habe versucht, es auf die übliche Weise zu nähen: in zwei Schritten. Erster Schritt – Nähen von der Schulternaht zur Seitennaht. Zweiter Schritt – Nähen von der Seitennaht bis zur Schulternaht.
Ihr könnt nicht auf einmal nähen, da ihr die Schulternaht aus dem Träger ziehen und die rechten Seiten zusammenfügen müsst.

Das war ziemlich schwierig. Also habe ich mit dem zweiten Armloch etwas Neues ausprobiert (für mich). Ich habe die Nahtzugaben beider Armlöcher (Futter und Leinen) nach innen gebügelt, alles sorgfältig zusammengesteckt und am Rand langsam zusammengenäht. Es sah viel besser aus als das erste Armloch.

After finishing the armholes, i turned everything inside out again. Pinned and stitched both hems together. Than i opened one side seam (about 15 cm) and squeezed everything through this little opening.

*Nachdem ich die Armlöcher fertiggestellt hatte, habe ich alles wieder nach außen gedreht. Beide Säume festgesteckt und zusammengenäht. Dann öffnete ich eine Seitennaht (ca. 15 cm) und quetschte alles durch diese kleine Öffnung.

After i turned it over again, i closed the opening. Now i had a nearly finished vest, fully lined!
I noticed that the linen i used, gets larger after sewing it ( you can prevent this if you iron interfacing to every piece…which i will do in future projects.)…so i soaked it in some hot water. I thought the lining wouldn´t shrink, but well…it did. So i had to reopen the opening in the side seam, turn everything inside out again and shorten the length a bit. In the end it was worth it, because now it looks really good.

*Nachdem ich es wieder umgedreht hatte, schloss ich die Öffnung. Jetzt hatte ich eine fast fertige Weste, voll gefüttert!
Mir ist aufgefallen, dass das Leinen, welches ich verwendet habe, nach dem Nähen größer wird (das könnt ihr verhindern, wenn ihr auf jedes Schnittteil Einlage aufbügelt … was ich in zukünftigen Projekten tun werde.) … also habe ich es in etwas heißem Wasser eingeweicht. Ich dachte, das Futter würde nicht schrumpfen, aber gut … es tat es. Also musste ich die Öffnung in der Seitennaht wieder öffnen, alles wieder umdrehen und die Länge etwas kürzen. Am Ende hat es sich gelohnt, denn jetzt sieht es wirklich gut aus.

After everything was finished and ironed, i made the buttonholes, handsewed the buttons and the trim onto the vest…i normally don´t handsew. So this took me really, really long. But the result is great.

*Nachdem alles fertig und gebügelt war, habe ich die Knopflöcher gemacht und die Knöpfe und die Borte an die Weste per Hand angenäht … normalerweise nähe ich nicht mit der Hand. Das hat wirklich sehr, sehr lange gedauert. Aber das Ergebnis ist großartig.

Linen Vest Part I (Leinen-Weste Teil I)

I really love this vest and i had the perfect fabric and trim for it.

*Ich liebe diese Weste wirklich und ich hatte den perfekten Stoff und Borte dafür.

I bought the buttons online, everything else, i had at home. *Ich habe die Knöpfe online gekauft, alles andere, hatte ich zu Hause.

I drafted the pattern from scratch myself, the first one since i graduated. I´m still a bit nervous about the fit, but we will see.

*Ich habe das Muster selbst entworfen, das erste seit meinem Abschluss. Ich bin immer noch etwas nervös wegen der Passform, aber wir werden sehen.

I added a lot of seam allowance while cutting it out, better safe than sorry. *Ich habe beim Ausschneiden eine Menge Nahtzugabe hinzugefügt, besser sicher als traurig.

I also cut it out last year, but didn´t have time to sew it together. Well better now than never. I started with ironing interfacing to the epaulettes and the front piece, where my buttons will be placed. I used a more sturdy, non-stretchy interfacing.

*Ich habe es letztes Jahr auch zugeschnitten, hatte aber keine Zeit, es zusammenzunähen. Naja, jetzt ist besser als nie. Ich fing mit dem aufbügeln der Einlage (Vliesline) auf die Epauletten und dem Vorderteil, wo meine Knöpfe platziert werden, an. Ich habe eine stabilere, nicht dehnbare Vliesline verwendet.

While ironing the interfacing you should be careful. The iron shouldn´t be to hot nor to cold and don´t slide the iron over the pieces like you would do when ironing fabric or finished garments. Press the iron from the middle outward. When you slide the iron it could happen that you get some wrinkles or worse the interfacing could shift.

*Beim Bügeln der Einlage solltet ihr vorsichtig sein. Das Bügeleisen sollte nicht zu heiß oder zu kalt sein und das Bügeleisen nicht über die Teile schieben, wie man es beim Bügeln von Stoff oder fertigen Kleidungsstücken tun würde. Drückt das Bügeleisen von der Mitte nach außen. Wenn ihr das Bügeleisen schiebt, kann es vorkommen, dass ihr Falten bekommt oder sich die Einlage verschiebt.

Then i ironed the cut-on button-tape back.

*Dann bügelte ich die angeschnittene Knopfleiste zurück.

I started sewing the epaulettes. I sewed them together, cut the seam allowance back, clipped the corners and turned the epaulettes around, which was quite some work because they are small.

*Ich fing an, die Epauletten zu nähen. Ich habe sie zusammengenäht, die Nahtzugabe zurückgeschnitten, die Ecken abgeschnitten und die Epauletten herumgedreht, was ziemlich anstrengend war, weil sie klein sind.

Trying to sew exact. Right sides facing each other ( but you know that by now) *Ich versuche genau zu nähen. Rechte Seiten einander zugewandt (aber das wisst ihr inzwischen)

Looks nice and even. *Sieht gut und gleichmäßig aus.

Actually, you can minimize the seam allowance before cutting them out, but i need to make sure that everything turns out they way i planned. If you have 1cm allowance you HAVE to cut it back. With it, it would be to thick to turn it around properly. *Eigentlich könnt ihr die Nahtzugabe minimieren, bevor ihr sie ausschneidet, aber ich muss sicherstellen, dass alles so verläuft, wie ich es geplant habe. Wenn ihr 1 cm Zugabe habt, MÜSST ihr ihn zurückschneiden. Damit, wäre es zu dick, um es richtig herumzudrehen.

Flatten the sharp corners and clip them in. But be careful, don´t clip the stitches. *Flacht  die scharfen Ecken ab und schneidet sie ein. Aber seid vorsichtig, schneidet nicht in die Naht.

And then turn them around. It is a bit hard but it works. *Und dreht sie dann um. Es ist ein bisschen schwer, aber es funktioniert.

And that were all preparations before i started to sew everything together. As you know, i always start with the dart (oh god it is a rhyme). First i marked the dart with some thread, so i can see it on the other side.

*Und das waren alles Vorbereitungen, bevor ich anfing, alles zusammen zu nähen. Wie ihr wisst, beginne ich immer mit den Abnähern. Zuerst habe ich den Abnäher mit einem Faden markiert, damit ich ihn auf der anderen Seite sehen kann.

It is easier to take a contrasting thread. *Es ist einfacher, einen Kontrastfaden zu nehmen.

This is how it looks onto the second piece. *So sieht es beim zweiten Schnittteil aus.

Everything was marked, so i sewed the darts and ironed in the direction of the side seam.

*Als alles markiert war, begann ich die Abnäher zu nähen und in die Richtung der Seitennaht zu bügeln.

It looks a bit wonky, but thats because of the fabric. *Es sieht ein bisschen wackelig aus, aber das liegt am Stoff.

The next step was sewing together the back pieces and the front pieces.

*Der nächste Schritt war das Zusammennähen der Rückenteile und der Vorderteile.

The middle back piece and the side back piece. *Das mittlere Rückenteil und das seitliche Rückenteil.

1cm seam allowance is enough. * 1cm Nahtzugabe ist ausreichend.

And ironed apart and flat. *Und auseinander und flach gebügelt.

The last i sewed was the side seam. I added 4cm seam allowance while cutting the pieces out. I stitched it with a wide stitch, for the fitting, this helps you when you need to unpick the seam, if the fit is to tight or to large. I made the same with the shoulder seams, i didn´t sew the epaulettes in right now, because they are not necessary for the fitting.

*Das letzte was ich genäht habe war die Seitennaht. Ich habe 4 cm Nahtzugabe hinzugefügt, während ich die Teile zugeschnitten habe. Ich habe es mit einem sehr breiten Stich, für die Anprobe, genäht. Dies hilft euch, wenn ihr die Naht auftrennen müsst, wenn die Passform zu eng oder zu groß ist. Das Gleiche habe ich mit den Schulternähten gemacht, die Epauletten habe ich momentan nicht angenäht, da sie für die Anprobe nicht notwendig sind.

The last step was to serge every seam allowance. Although i will line this vest, linen is fraying like crazy and i don´t want to have to deal with damaged seams after one wash. ( I will wash this vest with hand.) And i have to say that i normally serge every seam, if it is hidden or not. Most people say that it doesn´t matter because nobody will see it, but i know it and that knowledge is driving me crazy.

*Der letzte Schritt bestand darin, jede Nahtzugabe zu versäubern. Obwohl ich diese Weste füttern werde, franst das Leinen wie verrückt aus und ich möchte nicht nach einer Wäsche, mit beschädigten Nähten konfrontiert werden. (Ich werde diese Weste mit der Hand waschen.) Und ich muss sagen, dass ich normalerweise jede Naht versäubere, ob sie versteckt ist oder nicht. Die meisten Leute sagen, dass es keine Rolle spielt, weil niemand es sehen wird, aber ich weiß es und dieses Wissen macht mich verrückt.

After serging linen i have to clean my machine. *Nach dem Versäubern des Leinens muss ich meine Maschine putzen.

This is it for part one. Now comes the fitting part, then cutting out the lining and finishing the garment.
